Edge Grove School, Radlett

Construction of a new teaching block to complement the existing Grade II Listed Building.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Client: Edge Grove School Trust
Contract Value: £2,330,000
Duration: 49 Weeks
Contract Type: JCT Design & Build 2016

Edge Grove School looked to relocate its lower school into a purpose-built, cutting-edge building due to the limitations of its existing facility. Through collaboration with all stakeholders, we designed a building that was to future-proof the school, providing ambient natural light and ventilation, eliminating the need for mechanical ventilation and cooling; substantially lowering heating costs whilst complimenting the existing Grade II Listed Buildings.

We constructed a new single-storey block which provides the school with six classrooms, an activity hall, a headmaster’s room and toilets, set within their 48-acre grounds. The building was fitted out to a high specification, featuring bespoke joinery, glazed vision panels, floor coverings, finishes and timber door sets & ironmongery. The MEP services installation included news BMS, fire and HVAC systems.

We had to overcome a ‘no dig’ zone because of existing tree roots which was achieved by using a floating slab system. Regular dialogue and look-ahead meetings with the school enabled key facilities, such as the swimming pool to remain accessible at all times.

We are absolutely delighted to see our pupils thriving in their new learning environment. There was both a practical and educational need to replace the previous outdated structures and to relocate the Lower School into a self-contained facility.

The clever design offers a light and spacious environment for the children to flourish and further reinforces our commitment to ensuring the best possible learning environment for our pupils.
