The Old Fire Station
Sensitive conversion of a historic building in the heart of East Ham’s civic quarter into new affordable homes and commercial space with London Borough of Newham’s innovative property company, Populo.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
A stunning restoration of East Ham’s old fire station building into seven London Affordable Rent homes. The redbrick Old Fire Station with its heritage windows provide plenty of light and living space, optimised through open plan designs. Three of the apartments have balconies overlooking the inner courtyard. There is a secure entrance, with a cycle storage area, on the quieter Nelson Street. The ground floor unit on East Ham High Street is a separate cafe. The homes have been in use since spring 2021.
The Old Fire Station has been shortlisted for RIBA London Award 2023, amongst these others:
New London Architecture Award, Retrofit (Shortlisted)
AJ Architecture Award, Refurb Project (Shortlisted)
Dezeen Architecture Award (Longlisted)
